SLG-20-AX Quick Start Guide

The SLG-20-AX from XM2 Labs is a Retractable Landing Gear system designed to upgrade the FreeFly Alta X drone.

The SLG-20-AX is a turn-key solution for a retractable landing gear system on the Freefly Alta X. The SLG-20-AX kit is based around the SLG-20 Retractable landing gear module, which has been developed and battle tested for heavy lift drones. The kit includes all the wiring and mounting hardware you need for attachment to the Alta X.

Safety Notice

The SLG-20-AX is a mechanical system driven by powerful servo motors. The servo motors have very high torque and the potential to cause serious injury. SLG-20-AX users must be aware and alert to the risks involved in using the SLG-20-AX. The primary safety risks include injury due to unexpected actuation of the servo motor and mechanism. Whenever the SLG-20-AX is powered, the user should use caution and keep hands well clear of the mechanism. Any maintenance on the SLG-20-AX should be performed with power removed.

When powering up the SLG-20-AX, the legs must be in the down position. The SLG-20-AX does not have position feedback, and it assumes that the legs are DOWN on boot. If the SLG-20-AX is booted with the legs in the UP position, the legs can move violently when first actuated and present risk to the user.

Kit Contents (SLG-20-AX)

  • 2x SLG-20-AX Dual Leg Module with Power Supply

  • 2x Leg Horizontal Tube with joiners and rubber end caps

  • 4x Leg Vertical Tube with Spring Holders

  • 1x XT30 Y-Lead Power Cable

  • 1x Y-Lead Signal Cable

  • 1x SLG-20 Calibration Jig

  • 1x VTX Relocation Cabl

Mounting

Step 1: Remove eight bolts from the Alta X Frame as marked in blue below: (Keep these bolts to use if you want to remove the SLG-20-AX.)

Step 2: Use the provided bolts (18x M3x14mm & 2x M4x18mm) to attach the SLG-20-AX modules to the frame: marked in green and pink below: (Use thread locker to attach)

Power

There is a power supply built into the SLG-20-AX which runs on the 48v battery voltage of the Alta X and provides 12v to run the SLG-20-AX modules. This power supply is pre-mounted to each SLG-20-AX module. The input to the power supplies needs to be connected to the Power Expansion Port of the Alta X: located between booms 1 and 2.

An XT30 Y-Lead is provided to provide power to the modules.

For more details on wiring, please refer to the full wiring diagram below.

Receiver signal

The SLG-20-AX is controlled by PWM via a Y-Lead Servo Cable which is provided in the kit. One end of the Y lead connects to the radio receiver, and the other two ends connect to the SLG-20 Control Boards.

The radio receiver must be configured to output the correct signal. A PWM signal between 800-1200 will LOWER the legs and a PWM signal between 1800-2300us will RAISE the legs.

Configure the radio receiver to automatically retract the SLG-20-AX legs DOWN if the user experiences loss of signal.

For more details on wiring, refer to the full wiring diagram below.

Assembling Legs

Post Installation Testing

With the legs fully removed from the SLG-20-AX tube clamps, use the radio controller to raise and lower the mechanism. Verify that all four mechanisms move smoothly. Ensure that the mechanisms provide synchronized motion for each pair of legs connected to a control board. With the legs raised, turn off the radio controller and verify that the legs lower automatically.

These tests should be done AFTER initial installation.

Pre-Flight Testing

Install the legs into the SLG-20-AX tube clamps and test that the legs move smoothly up and down. Check that when the legs are raised, the rubber springs are under a small amount of tension.

This test should be actioned every time the aircraft is setup before flight.
